Land of the Sikhs, Punjab, India
Punjab means the land of five rivers. Punjab is one of the most fertile regions in India, sometimes called "India's bread-basket". The region is ideal for wheat-growing as well as rice, sugar cane, fruits and vegetables.
Amritsar is a major commercial and cultural center in the heart of Punjab. The city is the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion and is home to the Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple.
One of Punjab's most interesting rituals is the lowering of the flags ceremony, held at India's Wagah border each evening before sunset. Indian guards in red and gold turbans march out to meet their Pakistani counterparts in a choreographed affair greeted with loud applause from both sides of the border. It's a splendid show of patriotism, pomp and panache.
In 2013 RoJean and I joined a small group of intrepid tourers with Jim Cline Tours ( http://www.jimcline.com) and spent four weeks in northern India with our guide Karl Grobl...an exceptional leader and photojournalist. Our in-country guide was DV, short for Digvijay Singh (dv_jagat@yahoo.com).
