Pushkar ka Mela
During the first full moon of November, India’s Pushkar Camel Fair (Pushkar ka Mela), Asia’s largest camel and livestock market springs to life in the sleepy, picturesque, lakeside town of Pushkar attracting more than 11,000 camels, horses and cattle and visited by over 400,000 people over the period. Pushkar is an ancient religious town, in the Thar desert of Rajasthan, provides an almost surreal backdrop for this unique event.
In 2013 RoJean and I joined a small group of intrepid tourers with Jim Cline Tours ( http://www.jimcline.com) and spent two weeks with our guide Karl Grobl...an exceptional leader and photojournalist. Our in-country guide was DV, short for Digvijay Singh (dv_jagat@yahoo.com).
Over the course of two+ weeks we visited many locations in Rajasthan besides Pushkar...other fascinating destinations included Delhi (the heartbeat of Northern India), Jaisalmer (has the oldest living fort in the world), Jaipur (the Pink City) and Jodhpur (the “Blue City” because of the indigo-colored houses). There was also time spent in the desert at Manvar Camp and visiting small Boshnoi villages. And finally the incredible Taj Mahal, the brilliant white marble jewel of India.
In this Gallery I tell the visual story of the Pushkar Camel Fair...I hope you enjoy it...
