St. Paul, Alaska
Visualize an island draped with curtains of ocean mist, rolling hills of green grass. During the early spring and into the summer the drama of nestlings emerge on the dramatic cliffs of the Pribilof Islands. The Pribilof Islands are well known for their abundance of birds, the northern fur seal, and a picturesque view of rolling hills with a variety of tundra flowers.
Saint Paul Island is the largest of the Pribilof Islands, a group of five Alaskan volcanic islands located in the Bering Sea between the United States and Russia. The city of St. Paul is the only residential area on the island. St. Paul Island currently has one school (K-12, 100 students), one post office, one bar, one small store, and one church. Saint Paul Island has the largest Aleut community in the United States. And a total population of 532 people
.
Trident Food’s impressive St. Paul operation is the largest crab production facility in the world. The facility processes a variety of Alaska crab species with a daily capacity of 450,000 lbs of crab.
The island is often mentioned on The Discovery Channel's show Deadliest Catch. St. Paul island is a place where the fishing boats in the Bering Sea can dock the boats to rest, unload, or get medical help.
In August 2012 I had the opportunity to visit St. Paul Island and photograph many of the bird species that nest along its cliffs. The tour was led by Alan Murphy http://www.alanmurphyphotography.com/) and Greg Downing http://www.naturescapes.net/)
